Wildlife Safety

Bears, moose, outdoor etiquette

Leashed dog on a snowy trail with wildlife-aware etiquette

Alaska’s trails and neighborhoods overlap with wildlife, so tight control, clean camps, and clear sight lines are the foundation of safe adventures with companion animals.

Trailhead checklist

  • Leash, recall training, and spare ID tag on collar or harness.
  • Bear spray, whistle, and headlamp for short daylight months.
  • Insulated water, booties, and pad for cold ground rests.
  • Packed-out waste and sealed snack storage away from the path.

Give moose a wide berth and choose alternate routes rather than trying to pass with a dog; keep pets off thin ice and tidal edges for safe, incident-free outings.
